Incorporated in 1938, we’ve operated as the first African-American owned full service grocery store in New Orleans for 77 years. Affectionately known as “Circle” to our area residents, we’ve welcomed generations of customers as community hub in New Orleans – providing groceries, prepared food, and services such as a pharmacy, a doctor, a dentist, a chiropractor, check cashing and banking, and a place to buy school uniforms.
Erected as “St. Bernard Market” in 1854, we were initially an open-sided structure and built as part of a network of a dozen markets scattered across New Orleans. Herbert Gabriel, an original fruit stand owner in the market, bought out the other vendors and incorporated “Circle Food Store” in the 1930s, hailing the name from the addition of the vestibule and the iconic arched colonnade that wrapped the corner for the, then, busy streetcar intersection. Since then, we promised to be your everyday grocery store delivering the best customer service, offering the best in specialty meats, local gourmet brands and ingredients.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, our store was flooded and operations were halted with the lack of funds to restore the building. Nevertheless, our community advocated for our return, and conversely we believed in our community. And in January 2014, we reopened our doors to demonstrate our long-term commitment to our customers and the city of New Orleans.
Our employees are your friends and neighbors. Families depend on us to deliver quality in everything we do. We are the people you trust to have what you need, when you need it. If we don’t have an item that you need, let us know and we’ll get it (that’s our Pink Elephant Guarantee!). We exist to serve our customers! We take that responsibility seriously, constantly striving to deliver a better shopping experience. We know that quality and service are what brings customers back to our doors.
